many of the photographers started their photography by mob cam, then digi cam, then dslr.... for a good photographer camera is not a matter, creativity is the 1st thing......

Actually the entry level DSLR is Canon 1100D with Kit Lens.

As for Point n Shoot, there is no entry level P&S .. as they are all considered entry level hehe.

But it all depends on your budget basically.

Canon 40D | Canon 70-200 f4 L | Canon 17-85mm | Canon 50mm f1.4

I am agreed with 'jirudeboy'. photography is ART, where Only 'creativity' is important. equipment is important when our skills improve to the level to match the level of the equipment.
To start with, i think a good point and shoot camera would be enough (if one doesn't have DSLR). Also we need to consider the limitation of equipment in use. DSLR is important to enhance our self to the next level.
(that's my personal opinion)

@ samitp
u cannot kill an enemy with a toy gun ... or will u by using an art of killing an enemy with a toy gun ....
kindly dont make a decision coz u dont like or wanna spend dat much on a DSLR ..
for example tell me how to achieve depth of field which is one of the most important tool of creativity in photography ...
canon 1100 d ( 21000 rs) , nikon d 3100 (24000 rs)
a good point and shoot 18000-24000 ... where is the difference
but if u wanna be creative with a 4000-10000 price range ... plz let me know about the creativity u achieved ..
point and shots are good for a banker who wana capture his babys birthday
all above i hv said is truly based on myy personal experience which i hv achieved after wasting my time and money . dats y m bit emotional on saving your money ! ;-)

When you are going to start, start with openers. Nikon D3100 / Cannon 1100D or Sony A37 with kit lens will be the right choice. All of them provide auto and manual for learners along with provision for add on feature for future. You can add enough lens/Flash etc for your future use.
